I love it, but it's sad that it not only gets over sung but also in the wrong words

Re: I'm forever blowing bubbles
A song that is at its finest when sung by 3 or 4 drunken blokes stripped to the waist outside a bar in a foreign city. It is how the composers would have imagined it.

When sung by a large crowd still makes the (remaining) hairs stand on end.

It was adopted in the 20's when we had a curly headed player who was compared to bubbles in the Pears soap advert.

Re: I'm forever blowing bubbles
My understanding is we adopted it for the first Wembley cup final in 1923. The Pears soap advert was popular at the time with the curly haired boy called Bubbles in it!

Anyone know the name of the shit band that played Bubbles on the pitch at the Boleyn? Most of them are probably dead by now.

When did we adopt it? I believed it was sung by the ladies to one of our players who had curly hair in the 30s but not sure if that's true.

Yes, that is true.

Re: I'm forever blowing bubbles
It's truly an excellent song. For me, it is just like a Tom Waits song, both musically and lyrically, somehow written before he was even born. Tom could be a reincarnation of one (or all) of the three who wrote it back when. It works as a rough drinking song, as we do at matches, or a sweet ballard of hope, see "The Sweet And Lowdown," by Woody Allen.

Written in 1918, first recorded in 1919, it seems it was THE hit that caught the public's imagination both sides of the Atlantic in the immediate aftermath of the bloodiest war of them all. The mixture of both deep blues and eternal hope made it apt for the time, and all times, obviously.

As a lover of songs and West Ham, I'm very proud of our tradition with Bubbles.

Is it true the Blackburn players led by Tony Gale sang Bubbles in their changing room after winning the PL in 1995?

I agree. I'm also quite surprised it took the bin-dippers so long to half-inch the concept and then try to pass it off as their own idea.

I must say, it's lovely to have our own, unique song

Old Vera sings it well

Re: I'm forever blowing bubbles
It's sung in the wrong key. When it gets to 'fortune's always hiding' everyone has to bring it down a key cos they can't reach the notes.

Start in a lower key. Get Aled Jones.

One question: why do we only sing the chorus of I'm forever blowing bubbles?

The Hammers 4:07 Sun Sep 27
Re: I'M FOREVER BLOWING BUBBLES
Verse 1

I'm dreaming dreams,
I'm scheming schemes,
I'm building castles high.
They're born anew,
Their days are few,
Just like a sweet butterfly.
And as the daylight is dawning,
They come again in the morning.

Chorus
I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air,
They fly so high,
Nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams,
They fade and die.
Fortune's always hiding,
I've looked everywhere,
I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air.

Verse 2
When shadows creep,
When I'm asleep,
To lands of hope I stray.
Then at daybreak,
When I awake,
My bluebird flutters away.
Happiness new seemed so near me,
Happiness come forth and heal me.

Chorus
I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air.
They fly so high,
Nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams,
They fade and die.
Fortune's always hiding,
I've looked everywhere,
I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air.
